A.064 Houses in the woods, two detached houses, Viimsi, Estonia
When one day two investors from Estonia appeared in our office, we were a bit surprised. We were even more surprised when after conversing with them for one hour we shook hands on it making a deal for two houses in the vicinity of Tallinn. The plot on which the houses were supposed to be built turned out to be a dense forest. The investors cared about combining home life with the zone outside where often their daily life goes on. An external kitchen, a dining room, a sauna or pool are the elements that should be an integral, but an external part of the house. Hence the need for a large number of roofed terraces. However, the greatest challenge was to reconcile this idea with the trees growing on the plot. It was then when we came up with the idea about roofs with large holes in the middle that do not interfere with greenery.
